Insulated Chimney Damper
Description and Purpose
The Insulated Damper (throttle valve) is a chimney control element equipped with a rotating plate inside. It allows you to manually adjust the channel cross-section and control the draft force.
Why a damper is needed:
- Fuel economy: By partially closing the damper during stable combustion, you reduce excess draft. Fuel burns slower, heat emission lasts longer, and valuable heat does not escape through the chimney too quickly.
- Heat retention: When the fireplace or stove is not in use, a closed damper prevents the house from cooling down through the chimney stack.
Safety Standards
According to the European safety standard LVS EN 16510-1, the damper is structurally designed not to close the chimney 100%.
The rotating plate features a technological cut-out (or gap) providing a minimum cross-section of at least 20 cm² (or 3% of the area). This is a protection against carbon monoxide (CO): even if the damper is fully closed before combustion is complete, smoke will escape through the pipe without penetrating into the room.

Operation Tips
- When to close: The damper can be throttled down only after the fuel has flared up well. It can be fully closed only when no red embers remain in the firebox.
- When to open: During lighting and every time a new batch of fuel is loaded, the damper must be fully open to prevent smoke from entering the room.
- Installation location: Usually installed as the first or second element of the insulated chimney, at a height convenient for hand reach.
