The flue cover protects the flue from atmospheric precipitation and objects entering the flue. The diameter and the height of the legs of the canopy shall be chosen so as not to have a strong draught effect on the one hand, while on the other hand protecting the flue from water ingress into the house.
A mesh in insulated flue cover (spark arrestor) could be used to suppress sparks or to protect the flue from birds. Mesh size 10x10 mm or 20x20 mm.
The use of such a cover should be avoided when using softwood, damp wood as a fuel and the mesh should be checked for fouling.
Non-standard covers can be made on order.
Dangerous situations often arise when combustion products, including sparks, are released into the flue, which can cause fires in roofing and building structures. The working principle of a flue spark arrestor is as follows:
- the flue gases escape through the flue channel
- at the end of the chimney, it comes into contact with an barrier (cover), after which the direction of its movement changes
- at the chimney exit, all sparks pass through a mesh against which they are extinguished.
